The Alumni talk was conducted by Department of Mechanical Engineering on 27th October 2023. Mr.J.Dinesh, CEO, Padink Engineering services (Mechanical batch 2009-2013) was the resource person for the event. The talk was delivered under the topic of “Over view of Industrial plant design” for the third year and final year Mechanical Engineering students. 63 active participants attended the event. The objective of the program was to familiarise the students to the concept of Industry plant design.
The Speaker explained about the field of industrial engineering and plant structure design. He also discussed how to find a suitable placement opportunity as well as the numerous tactics that businesses often use throughout the hiring process. He also briefed about the importance of projects and internship role for getting placed in a good company with a good package. Overall, the students found the session was very useful for their career development.

The 31 active participants who attended were 3rd year Mechanical Engineering students. The objective of the programme was to help the students understand the opportunities in service industries.
On October 20th, 2023, the Department of Mechanical Engineering hosted an alumni talk session. Mr. Hariharan K, Regional Services Executive, Asian Paints Ltd, Chennai (Mechanical Engineering, Batch 2014–2018), was the resource person for the event. The alumni talk session was delivered under the topic “Unlocking the opportunities and success in the service industry”.
The alumni explained various opportunities in the service industries. Also explain the importance of practical knowledge in production methods, design and assembly methods. Overall, the students found this session very useful for their careers. The SAE India Southern Section (SAEISS) Bicycle Design Competition (BDC) 2023 was conducted at PSNA College of Engineering and Technology in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. Department of Mechanical Engineering – SRMIST Vadapalani campus students participated in the event and secured overall 4th Rank and 3rd Prize in Best Design category. Our students team Motonix achieved this feat in their maiden attempt.
The Bicycle Design Competition of 2023 was an exhilarating showcase of innovation, creativity and sustainability. Held in a modern and eco-friendly venue, the event brought together bicycle enthusiasts, designers, engineers, and manufacturers. Sustainability and eco-consciousness were the driving themes of the competition. Participants were challenged to create bicycle designs that not only offered cutting-edge performance and functionality but also had a minimal environmental impact. Designers were encouraged to use sustainable materials, explore recyclable components and incorporate renewable energy sources into their designs.
The judging panel was composed of industry & Academic experts, environmentalists and cycling enthusiasts, ensuring a fair evaluation of the designs based on various criteria, including innovation, aesthetics, usability and environmental impact.
Bicycle design competition is an opportunity to provide undergraduate engineering students with a real-life engineering challenge. It has been designed to provide exposure to the kinds of situations that engineers face in their real-life work environment. Attendees had the opportunity to test ride the bicycles and interact with the designers, gaining insights into the thought processes behind the creations.
Kingpin Racing is a team of 25 ebullient engineers who constantly strive to push the limits of Formula Student Racing. The team is based from the Mechanical Department of SRMIST Vadapalani Campus. Founded in the year 2016, the team has participated in Supra 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2022. SAEINDIA SUPRA 2022 event was held at buddh international circuit, Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Supra event comprises of design presentation, cost report presentation, business plan presentation, static events and dynamic events. Flagship event of SAE INDIA, Supra 2022 provides various insights to students about how a vehicle can be manufactured from scratch, team building skills and leadership skills within a short span of time. On a whole, student learn how to fabricate a Formula- style vehicle as per the design standards of SAE International.
A Tech-Talk was organised on “Six Sigma – Lean Manufacturing” at our campus on 19/03/2018 by Dept. of Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Jayabalan, Director, PQL solutions Pvt. Ltd. was the resource person. Around 50 students and faculty members attended the event.
Mr. Jayabalan emphasised students to develop their business sense in solving Industry problems and reducing the overall manufacturing cost. The main objective of implementing Six-Sigma in Industries is to reduce the cost, so students were advised to learn some Lean manufacturing like Six-Sigma, 5-S, Kaizen to make themselves Industry-ready.
The Industry should be designed to manufacture products based on Buyer’s market (i.e. offering discounts, financing customers, etc.) rather than seller’s market. Process quality has to be focused and inspection on the process has to be carried out regularly.
On 14th March 2018, our Mechanical engineering department organised a workshop on Photography for the students who were interested in the same. Students from various departments
participated and were benefited from this workshop. Mr. Aaron Prince Godson, founder of Aaron Prince Photography and DART enterprises was the resource person for the day. The students were explained the basics of photography which comprises of the three main parameters – ISO, Aperture and Shutter speed. The workshop also enabled the students to have a hands-on experience in using
vintage cameras and cameras from the modern era. The importance of photography in the engineering sector and the scope of career in the field of photography were also highlighted to the students by the resource person.
The second half of the workshop was more of a practical session which enabled the students to have a better understanding about the various lighting in photography which includes the three-main lighting – Key, Fill and Rim lighting. A complete photo shoot set up was set up including proper light positioning to demonstrate to the students how a professional photo shoot is done. There was a competition held after the workshop. The topic for the photography competition was ‘Story in a frame’. All the students participated enthusiastically and came up with brilliant photographs. The students were much benefited and provided positive feedback on the workshop.
The Institute of Indian Foundrymen (IIF) – Student Activity Centre was installed by Department of Mechanical Engineering, SRMIST Vadapalani Campus on 01st October 2019. The Chief Guest for the inaugural function Shri. Sanjay Shroff, President – IIF delivered the inaugural address. During his address, he highlighted the role of foundry industries and iron and steel productions in the Indian economy. He also did mention in his address about the paradigm shift of foundry industries in line with Industry 4.0 and the future of smart of foundries. Shri. K. Dhayalan, Chairman, IIF – Southern Region delivered an invited talk on the “Foundry Manufacturing Process”.
Earlier during the inaugural function Dr.S.Karthikeyan, Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, addressed and welcomed the guests and delegates. Dr.K.Duraivelu, Dean (E&T), SRMIST Vadapalani, felicitated the guests of the day with a memento. The Institute of Indian Foundrymen – Institution Membership Chief Guest Shri. Sanjay Shroff, President – IIF delivering Inaugural Address during installation of Institute of Indian Foundrymen (IIF) – Student Activity Centre. Duraivelu, Dean (E&T), SRMIST Vadapalani Campus by Shri. Sanjay Shroff, President – IIF. The office bearers for the Student Activity Centre were announced. The vote of thanks was proposed by Shri. R. Palani Murugan, Honorary Secretary, IIF – Chennai Chapter. The installation event of IIF – Student Activity Centre was an event of grand success and it got wide publicity in press and media.
A National level workshop on “Material Characterisation Techniques” was organised by the Department of Mechanical Engineering on December 10th & 11th 2018. More than 100 delegates from various institutions across the country participated in this workshop. The resource persons were internationally acclaimed experts and researchers from Indian academic and research organisations such as IIT, IGCAR, national centre for nanoscience and nanotechnology and University of Madras.
The First session started with a lecture on “Transmission Electron Microscope” by Dr. P. Thangadurai, Assistant Professor, Centre for Nanoscience and Technology, Pondicherry University, Puducherry. He discussed on the basic working principles, operations and applications of Transmission Electron Microscope.
Dr.V.Sridharan, Scientific Officer -G IGCAR, was the speaker of the afternoon session and gave a talk on “POWDER X-RAY DIFFRACTION”. The speaker briefly elaborated on ray powder diffraction, which is a rapid analytical technique primarily used for phase identification of a crystalline material and can provide information on unit cell dimensions. The last session of day one ended with a special lecture by Dr.R.Ramaseshan Scientific Officer F, IGCAR, Department of Atomic Energy, Kalpakkam “Nano mechanical Characterisation on small materials”.
The second day of the workshop started with a lecture on “Scanning Probe Microscopy” by Dr.S.Balakumar, Director, National Center for Nano sciences & Nanotechnology, University of Madras. The expert lecture for the afternoon session was given by Dr. C. Baby, Technical officer, Sophisticated Analytical Instruments Facility (SAIF), IIT Madras, on “Thermal Analysis Techniques”. The last session of the workshop was given by Dr. N.R. Sasirekha Assistant Professor, Department of Crystallography and Biophysics University of Madras, on “UV Visible and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy”.
At the end of this workshop, the participants came out with the better understanding of various Materials characterisations techniques and subsequent analysis of test results, which are the primary requirements for any researchers working in the research of materials and manufacturing and also aids them to write and publish the research articles in high impact and scopus indexed journals.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Organised a National Conference on “Current Research Outcomes in Mechanical Engineering NC-CROME’ 19” on March 15th – 16th, 2019. The conference brought together leading industrialists, engineers, academicians, scientists, research scholars and students to exchange and share their own experience covering topics related to Mechanical Engineering and allied sciences. More than 200 scholars across the nation participated in this conference. Dr.S.Karthikeyan – Professor & Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering gave the Welcome address.
The felicitation address was given by Dr.K.Duraivelu, Dean[E&T]. The chief guest, Dr.T.Sundararajan, Senior General Manager, Research & Development Wheels India Limited, Chennai gave the inaugural address. In his speech, he emphasised the students to have an attitude for continuous learning and motivated them to enrich their knowledge by participating in more number of technical events. The Guest of Honour Dr.Sivasrinivasu Devadula, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras gave a keynote address on Micro “Machining with Abrasive Water jets”. Dr. U. Mohammed Iqbal, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, SRMIST, Kattankulathur gave a key note address on “Advances in Metal Forming Techniques”.
On the second day of the conference, Dr.G.Kumaresan, Associate Professor – Institute for Energy Studies & Deputy Director – Centre for Research, Anna University gave the key note address on “Research Experience with Solar System Components”. This conference provided an opportunity to the participants to present the most recent innovation trends in the field of Mechanical Engineering to cater the needs of the ever-growing technological world.
Formula SAE Supra, is organised by SAE India every year during the month of June. This competition tests the engineering skills of SAE student members all around the country. The team KINGPIN from the Department of Mechanical Engineering was one among the 150 colleges who were shortlisted for this event among the overall of 500 colleges.
This event was held at Buddh International Circuit, in Noida, UP, which hosted 3 static events and 4 dynamic events. The static events comprised of, design presentation, Cost Report Presentation and Business Plan Presentation. To participate in this dynamic event the vehicle must clear a Technical Inspection, a tilt test, noise test and a brake test. The teams won prizes in various categories such as Clean Pit, Best Woman Participant, CAE award, and endurance test.
A National level technical symposium, KRATORQ2018, was conducted on 28th September 2018 by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at SRMIST Vadapalani campus. The department has taken
the meticulous initiatives to encourage the students to acquire knowledge in science and technology and also familiar with current trends happening in industry. This symposium served as a platform for students to showcase their talents and their interests towards various technologies. The Inaugural function of KRATORQ’18 was privileged by the presence of the guests Mr. G. S. Shankar, Engineering Manager, Innovation & Technology Development Division, Caterpillar India Pvt. Ltd., Chennai and Mr. P. Venkatesan, Hinduja Foundries, Ennore plant, Chennai.
The inaugural function was presided by Dr. K. Duraivelu, Dean (E&T) and Dr. S. Karthikeyan, Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, proposed the welcome address. Guest of honour Mr. P.Venkatesan encouraged the students with his inspiring speech and gave valuable insights about Industry 4.0 and latest foundry technology techniques. He compared the difference in the technologies before 30 years and today and mentioned the engagement of more sophisticated simulation software in foundry industries. Chief Guest Mr. G. S. Shankar delivered his address on the emerging technologies in the field of Mechanical and automotive Engineering, 3D printing, Big data, virtual testing Engineering, and Artificial intelligence. He insisted the students to undergo MOOC courses to enhance their skills in latest technologies. The souvenir on KRATORQ’18 was released by the dignitaries. The inaugural function was concluded by vote of thanks by Mr. R. A. Arul Raja, Assistant Professor. Students from various Engineering colleges across India have participated in large numbers and took part in various technical and non-technical events like Robo war, RC racing, Paper presentation, CAD Modeling, Lathe Master, Wild welder, wood pecker, HR Skills and so on. Prizes worth Rs. 1 Lakh were distributed to the winners of various events.
National Institution for Quality and Reliability (NIQR) organises Global Convention once in two years with a different theme. The theme for the year 2018 was “Digital Quality for Disruptive Future”, the 16th Global Convention of NIQR organised on 10th and 11th August 2018 at Chennai Trade Center. The convention was inaugurated by Shri. Ma Foi K Pandiarajan, Hon’ble Minister for Tamil Official Language, Culture and Archeology, Govt of Tamil Nadu.
During the convention NIQR presents many awards under various categories for outstanding performance in various fields including awards for best students from various colleges. As part of the award function, a quiz competition at national level was conducted earlier on 4th August 2018 on the convention theme wherein our students also participated. Out of 32 best teams, our students Lakshmi Narasimhan and Ravi Manish, 4th Year B.Tech Mechanical Engineering have emerged as winners and were awarded as best student award during the award function of the convention at Chennai Trade Center.
In addition, there were many awards presented by NIQR in various fields. They are NIQR – Ashok Leyland Award for Outstanding Organisation (presented to Tata Consulting Services), NIQR – Lucas – TVS award for outstanding service organisation (presented to SIRUTHULI, Coimbatore), NIQR – India Piston award for Life Achievement Award (presented to Dr. Munirathna Ananthakrishnan, Former Vice Chancellor – Anna University), NIQR – TVN – KIDAO award for outstanding educational institution (presented to The Gandhigram Rural Institute, Dindigul), NIQR – Accurate award for outstanding quality man (presented to Mr. R. Sivanesan, Vice President – Ashok Leyland), NIQR – Shcwing Stetter award for outstanding MSME (presented to Praveen Engineering Industries, Hosur)
Two days’ Automotive System Dynamics’ workshop was conducted on 19.03.18 and 20.03.18 at SRMIST Vadapalani Campus under the banner of Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). The workshop was invocated with a special address by Dr. K.Duraivelu, Dean(E&T) and welcome address by Dr. S.Karthikeyan, Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The Resource persons Mr. Vivek Devaraj and Mr. A.R.Prashanth from Over Square Automotive Tech handled both theory and practical sessions. Introduction to modern automobile & modern motorsports, chassis & roll cage, suspension system, Brakes, aerodynamics and hybrid vehicles were discussed on the first day. Also, importance about driverless cars, which are more energy-efficient, safer, less damage to the environment and more economical to operate and also under motor sports, the use of motorised vehicles for the group of competitive events held by various independent organisations were discussed.
The different racing competitions like autocross, BAJA SAE, drag race, formula one, grand tourer, kart racing, quad bike World rally championship and world endurance championship were discussed.
To impart the need of overcoming design failure, the resource person gave an example of Toyota car in world endurance championship, which is number one at all the laps but at last, it was unable to complete the lap because of hose pipe failure.
A AV was shown about the balancing of air drag Force, rolling resistance and gravitational force by traction force in race car and also the stream line air flow to cool the brakes and engine.
The difference between I.C engines and Electric Hybrid Vehicles (EHV’s) were also discussed. The importance of electric vehicles, battery types, battery management System, and efficiency and its performance and calculations to find torque needed for the given vehicle were solved.
On the second day the main topic discussed was power train and assembly (practical session). Discussions were made on continuously variable transmission, torque converter, types of engine configuration and Power train configuration. The design of power train comprises of simple power train, positioning of Power train components as close to centre of gravity and minimise engine and drive train weight and Centre of gravity height.
Students were very much interested in dismantling and assembly of four Stroke petrol engine, four stroke multicylinder petrol engine, 4- speed gear box, turbo charger and Brake assembly. Automotive dynamics and designing course book and a CD were given to all participants. The workshop ended with student’s feedback and Vote of thanks.
“Electric Mobility – Opportunities and Challenges” a National level conference was organised by Department of Mechanical Engineering, SRMIST Vadapalani Campus in association with National Institution for Quality and Reliability (NIQR) on 22nd February 2018. Dr. S. Karthikeyan, Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, addressed and welcomed the guests, delegates and the participants. Dr. K. Duraivelu, Dean (E&T) delivered felicitation address and felicitated the guests of the day with a memento. The Chief Guest Shri. P. K. Aggarwal, National President – NIQR, New Delhi and Vice President – Corp. Quality, TAFE Ltd delivered the inaugural address. During his address, he highlighted the importance of “Electric Mobility” and its future. The proceedings of the conference were released and a copy of the same was given to the dignitaries. Shri. K. Manikandan, Chairman – NIQR and Head – Sourcing Development, Ashok Leyland delivered a keynote address on the “Opportunities and Challenges” in automotive industries. Students from various institutions participated and presented papers on the conference theme. The jury members to evaluate the presented papers were professionals from various industries.
Dr. Mani Karthik, Scientist, ARCI – Hyderabad, delivered a keynote address in the valedictory function during which he did mention about the launch of Asia’s first supercapacitor powered Electric Buses in India. The valedictory function chief guest Shri. S. Rajasekar, CEO, Infant Engineers Pvt. Ltd delivered valedictory address. During his address, he encouraged the participants to come up with start-ups and become the entrepreneurs in the field of Electric Mobility as this could generate more opportunities in future. The best presented papers were awarded in the valedictory function. This conference was an event of grand success.
“Industry 4.0…way forward towards next orbit” is a National level conference organised by Department of Mechanical Engineering, SRMIST Vadapalani Campus in association with National Institution for Quality and Reliability (NIQR) on 7th April, 2017. Shri. P. K. Aggarwal, National President – NIQR, New Delhi and Vice President – Corp. Quality, TAFE Ltd., was the chief guest and had delivered the inaugural address. During his address, he highlighted the importance on how the world is gradually migrating towards complete digitalisation of the industries. Dr. K. Duraivelu, Dean (E&T), SRMIST Vadapalani campus felicitated the guests.
A keynote address was delivered by Shri. K. Manikandan, Chairman – NIQR and Head – Sourcing Development, Ashok Leyland. Earlier, Dr. S. Karthikeyan, Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, had welcomed the dignitaries, invitees and participants. The proceedings of the conference were launched by the dignitaries. Students from different Engineering colleges have participated and presented papers on the conference theme. Industrial professionals were invited to act as jury members in order to evaluate the paper presentation. Shri. S. Rajasekar, National Vice President – NIQR and CEO, Infant Engineers Pvt. Ltd delivered the valedictory address. During his address he shared how the concept of Industry 4.0 can be implemented in agricultural practices and industries. The best presented papers were awarded in the valedictory function on the same day. This conference was an event of grand success.
NCAMMT’17 is a National level conference on ‘Advances in Materials and Manufacturing Techniques’ organised by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, SRMIST Vadapalani Campus on 24th-25th March 2017.The Conference was commenced with the Inaugural function. Shri.K.Palanivel Raja, Director & Head of Central Institute of Plastic Engineering & Technology (CIPET), Chennai has graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and presented the inaugural address. He has shared his concern on conference topics and gave valuable speech on plastics tooling & product development in the industry through his experience. Dr.V.N. Mani, Scientist-E, CMET, Hyderabad was the Guest of Honor. Dr.K.Duraivelu, Dean [E&T], SRMIST Vadapalani campus has given the felicitation address. He had given introductory remarks about the conference and has felicitated the guests and participants. Earlier Dr.S.Karthikeyan, Head of the Department has proposed the welcome address. The conference proceedings were released by the Chief guest and guest of honour. Dr. G. Dan Sathiaraj has proposed the vote of thanks. All HODs, faculty members of various departments, Participants from various colleges, Research institutes and Students were presentduring the occasion.
The conference has attracted a good number of papers from MIT-Chennai, Anna University-Chennai, Velammal Engg., College-Chennai, ARCI-Hyderabad, CIPET-Chennai, and CISR-Chennai, Osmania University-Hyderabad etc., Around 120 papers were received for the conference and 89 papers were selected for the presentation based on the quality and theme. The first key note address was presented by Dr. V. N. Mani. He delivered lecture on “Design & Development of Systems for Preparation of High Pure Gallium & Indium and their Materials and Devices for Advanced Electronic Applications – A Bird’s Eye View”. In his overview presentation advancements, current trends and practices pertaining to the harnessing and sourcing electrical energy using Concentrator Photo Voltaic (CPV) technology concepts were discussed. Second key note address was delivered by Dr.Amitava Ghosh, Associate Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering,IIT Madras, Chennai. He delivered the keynote speech on “Exploring the Scope of Nano Fluids in High Speed Machining for Cooling/Lubrication”.In overview, he concentrated on need for high speed machining and its challenges.
On the second day of conference, Dr.S. Balasivanandha Prabhu, Associate Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Anna University delivered the third keynote address on “Severe Plastic Deformation Processing of Materials: Texture Analysis”. In his presentation, he covered the various methods and various aspects of structural changes in metals caused by severe plastic deformation process. He particularly concentrated on repetitive corrugation and straightening technique. Dr.Sushanta Kumar Panigrahi, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering,IIT Madras, Chennai delivered the fourth keynote address on “Innovative Manufacturing Routes to Improve Structural Efficiency of Magnesium Alloys”. In his talk, he concentrated on basics of slip systems, crystal structures valence electron and its effect on structural efficiency before introducing magnesium alloys. Finally, he presented a novel hybrid method to fabricate TiC-TiB2 reinforced magnesium matrix composites. All the lectures were very interactive. Participants were excited about the lectures and were interacting frequently.
Paper presentation were conducted in four sessions. All the participants had orally presented their research papers. Dr. I. Suresh Kannan (AP/Mech), Dr.G.DanSathiaraj (AP/Mech), Dr.K.Ramachandran (HOD, Physics), Dr.Jaganathan. K, (AP, Physics), Dr.V.N. Mani (Scientist-E, CMET) and Dr. T. Maridurai (Associate Professor, Velammal Engineering college) chaired the sessions. Respected Dean [E&T] and HOD/Mechanical Engineering distributed the certificates to all the participants at the end of the second day. Finally, HOD thanked everyone for attending two days national conference and concluded that the conference was a great success.
